The Triumph of Death at Pisa, frescoes painted by Bounamico Buffalmacco in the Camposanto (1336-1341), include The Triumph of Death, The Last Judgement, with a bestial Devil devouring and torturing lost sinners, and Christ judging saved souls. These and other wonderful frescoes in the Camposanto were damaged in 1944 by Allied bombing of Pisa. Restoration of these famous paintings has taken many years of devoted labor, which includes saving the drawings for the frescoes.

Frank Cebulski saw these remarkable paintings when he first visited Pisa and its famous leaning tower in 1970 when he began his long complex poem. He visited Pisa two more times to see the frescoes and refresh the vision of his poem, including the experiments by Galileo with falling bodies and his celestial discoveries with his telescope.
